We teach the children to read and write using elementary school textbooks from Hungary. With the older students we also touch on Hungarian literature and grammar, geography, and history during the school year. We place great emphasis on introducing Hungarian traditions and holidays as well. Naturally — as in every weekend school where classes take place once a week — we cannot follow the full curriculum of elementary schools in Hungary.

Our goal is for the children to fall in love with the Hungarian language and to receive a foundation that turns learning Hungarian into something that comes from within — so that they read and study Hungarian on their own at home, too. We continuously source our textbooks from Hungary and try to follow the latest teaching methods.

In recent years, more and more children have come to us who are learning Hungarian as a foreign language, since their families speak mostly English at home. This is a new challenge in the life of the school, but our teachers are open to training and new directions, so we can keep up with what is needed. One silver lining of the pandemic is that classes were held online for two years, which made it possible for children living in the wider Vancouver area to join as well.

We want to show young and old alike, in a playful way, how wonderful the Hungarian language is — and thereby open a new path for them in the world.
